caesura

Caesura is an environmental installation that serves as a place to retreat and refocus—to provide an intentional pause in the daily onslaught of information and distraction. The winding, connected paths are reminiscent of a person’s train of thought when untethered from technology.

Form and materials

The installation is made of four levels ranging from 18” to 36” tall to allow for sitting or leaning. The base is made of a light-colored stone with wood paneling on the taller levels. The foliage and running water work together to create a space that is inviting and encourages relaxation and stillness.

Process

The original brief for this project required designing a table or other gathering space according to the conversation that would be had in the space. As my project progressed around the idea of conversation itself, I landed on this maze-like form. Technology has the tendency to lead our conversations in a straight, predictable line and muffle our internal dialogues, rather than the natural meandering and dead ends that come with in-person conversation.

I began with sketches and built a model by hand. Once the specific layout and dimensions of the space was determined, I utilized a CNC cutting vendor to create a more precise model.
